#8 The Role of Trade

So far, we have looked at the state of consumption on a global scale, isolated the example of 'fast fashion' and considered the impact of such frenzied consumption on our water resources. Implicit in all of these previous posts is the central role of trade (e.g. the flow of materials and water). Trade is responsible for oranges in November, your daily coffee, and all things labeled 'Made in China'. Trade has founded Empires and fueled the growth of BRICS powerhouses - but at what cost? 

In my next post I hope to make the implicit explicit by honing in on one of the environmental repercussions of trade. 


Biodiversity and Trade


I recently attended a captivating lecture on biodiversity in which I learned that the driver of species loss is over-exploitation. I wondered whether this over-exploitation could be linked to consumption somehow, as we’ve seen before.
